Our Services

NACRC has a core team of 5 paid staff (3 part time and 2 full time), including a 12-man management committee, 4 specialist instructors and 6 regular volunteers who oversee the delivery of a range of direct and support services to Newham communities & its environs.

The Centre provides an invaluable support to over 20 affiliate member groups and 46 non-affiliated organisations from the African Caribbean community, and the Newham public in general.

  • Health & Wellbeing Classes for Older People: These are preventative services geared towards enhancing the general health / wellbeing and quality of life of the older members of our community. Activities, include:
  • Indoor Dance classes and aerobic sessions held weekly at the Centre on Wednesdays from 10.00 am – 12.00 pm.,
  • Outdoor Dance Movement Exercise Classes in Plaistow Park on Tuesdays from 12.30 pm – 1.30 pm.
  • Educational day trips to museums, botanical gardens, and theatre, etc.,
  • Seaside coach outings during summer,
  • Packaged holidays, weekend and week-long holidays to various destinations in the UK and Europe for the older people and their family members. 
  • Tea Parties held quarterly through the year.
  • Young Peoples’ Activities include diversionary activities from anti-social behaviour, amongst others:
  • Outdoor & Indoor Tables Tennis Classes in Plaistow Park and at the Centre every Tuesday from 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm,
  • Youth mentoring to include Work Placement experience for College Students to gain practical skills, and an understanding of the work environment.
  • Preventative Health Programmes:

Time-limited project specific work on health awareness and prevention of Long-Term Conditions in the African & Caribbean Communities in Newham & Tower Hamlets & neighbouring boroughs of East London. This is to sensitise the community to be better informed on the health issues that mostly impact the cohort group, noting the symptoms, prevention and management of these conditions.

  • Community Office Space Project: This hot-desking project is a social enterprise initiative set up to assist small community groups with the necessary infrastructure to start up and deliver services to their client groups.
    Bookings are taken on a three hourly block minimum in a week, charged at £15 per hour or £35 for 3 hours, and discounts are given on a sliding scale based on the length of time booked.

  • Community Engagement Events /Activities:
    We organise various events /activities are during the year, such as Health promotional activities (e.g. Health M.O.Ts & Heath /Wellbeing issues), Black History Month, Tea Dances, and Community Engagement/ Social Cohesion events to commemorate important anniversary occasions, etc.

  • In addition to providing direct services to the community, the Centre also provides resource support and a platform for other organisations to deliver a range of services and activities from.

Services provided by these groups from the Centre for the specific communities that they serve in Newham included some of the following:

  1. Day Care Nursery provided by Fairytale Day Nursery for 2–5-year-olds, part-time and full-time places available. Enquire on 0771 087 4405.

  2. Tuition classes available from Tuesday – Sunday for Key Stage 1-4 GCSE, and A ’Levels.

  3. Saturday Supplementary School: A service aimed at assisting African Caribbean children to improve their numeric skills in mathematics and enhance their fluency and proficiency in English.

  4. Youth groups engaging in such activities as singing, drama, and dance, thus helping them to develop their skills, reduce anti-social behaviour and even fashion a career path for them.

  5. Martial Arts lessons for Taekwondo (Tuesdays & Thursdays) and Karate (Wednesdays), empowering adults, and young people to use their time judiciously, learn self-discipline; improve self-esteem and their overall health and wellbeing.
     
  6. Domino Club (NACA Cavaliers) for older members of the Caribbean community. This preventive activity creates an opportunity twice weekly (Tuesdays & Thursdays) for recreation and socialisation, thus reducing isolation and providing physical & mental wellbeing, and social stimulus for this age group.

  7. Weekend activities include a monthly Friday Nite Social Club/ Ladies Nite (last Friday of every month), wedding receptions, Birthday Parties, Thanksgiving and funeral ceremonies, etc.

  8. Faith groups- Christian and Muslim prayer groups meet regularly on Fridays & Sundays and have a range of programmes also running during the week.
     
  9. Meetings, seminars, training /workshops, cultural and fundraising events take place all year round.

NACRC’s Facilities

Being strategically located on 627-633 Barking Road, Plaistow, E13, the NACRC is well served by buses 5, 115, 147 and 330, including Upton Park and Plaistow underground District Line stations.

Other facilities at the NACRC that makes it suitable for training, meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences, parties and cultural events among others and particularly for the African Caribbean communities in Newham include:

• A 120-seater (with tables and chairs) temperature regulated hall situated on the ground floor. Tables and chairs are provided as part of the package.

• A fully equipped kitchen.

• Separate male and female toilets located on the ground floor.

• A ground floor 20-place Crèche available for hire along with the hall or separately, with its own toilets in situ. DBS qualified staff provided by yourself.

• A paying sweet vending machine available for public use.

• 1 conference and 3 meeting rooms upstairs, with a seating capacity of 35 and 20 persons respectively.

• A projector and screen are available to hire. 

• Disabled toilet is suitably located on the ground floor immediately upon entering the building.

• Its own car park to the rear on Pragel Street.

• Wheelchair accessible with ramp.
